What is Intelligent Verbatim?
It sounds impressive, doesn’t it?
But what exactly does it mean?
Well, basically, it means that the transcription service has been gently edited to remove any of those awful sounding filler words and repetitions that we just simply cannot seem to go more than two sentences without saying, even here in Dubai.
Seriously. Try it.
Next time you’re having a conversation with somebody count the amount of times they say, ‘Erm,’ ‘Um,’ ‘Ah,’ ‘Er.’ You will be surprised just how many times you and I say them and, once you start paying attention, you’ll start to realise just how much filtering your brain has to do for you in everyday conversation.

But that’s not all. In a normal regular flowing conversation, people will often begin a sentence by repeating the beginning word or phrase multiple times before their brain catches up to their mouths and allows them to finish their thoughts.
Here’s an example.
Original (Full Verbatim)
Andrew: Well-, I, er, I think this one’s not-, er, no, no, I don’t like the blue one.
Edited (Intelligent Verbatim)
Andrew: No, I don’t like the blue one.
Do you see how much easier the Intelligent Verbatim transcription reads?
Now, that’s just one line. Imagine that across an entire document!
Exceptions To The Rule
Of course, medical and legal transcriptions often require a full verbatim word-for-word account of what is being said but the typical market research interview, focus group, follow-up interview or other marketing activity simply doesn’t need this level of depth. As long as the intended meaning of the sentence is still preserved!
This is an extremely important aspect of transcribing something into Intelligent Verbatim, you have to consciously ensure that you’re not changing the meaning of the sentence.
It’s a tricky thing to balance, in conjunction to the Top Five Transcription Mistakes, but in the end it always creates a clear and easy-to-read format that is perfect for handing over to clients.
